The Sharp GP2Y0A21YK0F measures distance by optical triangulation: reflected infrared light moves across a position-sensitive detector with target angle, rather than being interpreted from reflection intensity alone.
Range and behavior
The nominal range is about 10 to 80 cm and the analog output is nonlinear. Distances closer than the minimum can be ambiguous, so do not extrapolate the conversion outside its range.
Wiring and reading
Power it according to the datasheet and place a decoupling capacitor near the sensor because current is pulsed. Average samples, use a model-specific curve or library, and calibrate in the real mounting.
Measurement limits
Surface reflectivity, angle, and ambient light can affect the result, while ultrasonic sensors have different limitations. Test with the actual material and geometry before selecting either method.
