MAX30100 Pulse and SpO₂ Measurement: An Educational Experiment

MAX30100 Pulse and SpO₂ Measurement: An Educational Experiment

The MAX30100 combines red and infrared emitters with a photodetector for experiments with pulse and oxygen-saturation algorithms. The part is obsolete; for a new design, evaluate MAX30101 or MAX30102 and current library support.

Power and breakout differences

The IC itself uses low-voltage rails, while breakout boards differ in regulator and level-shifter design. Check the actual module schematic before applying 5 V or connecting a different controller.

Signal quality

Motion, contact pressure, ambient light, placement, and circulation affect the signal. Useful results require suitable sampling, filtering, an algorithm, and validation against a reference when accuracy matters.

Use limits

This is an educational signal-processing experiment, not a medical device or diagnostic instrument. Do not use its output for health decisions.

Engineering review: verify the library version, module operating voltage, and the actual board pinout before wiring; visually similar breakout boards can differ.
