Introducing OpenMANET: A High-Bandwidth Alternative for Wireless Mesh Networks

OpenMANET Overview

OpenMANET is an innovative open-source project designed to establish long-range wireless mesh Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs) utilizing Raspberry Pi single-board computers and Wi-Fi HaLow (802.11ah) chips from Morse Micro. This initiative gained attention following discussions about Morse Micro's USB Wi-Fi HaLow adapters, with users expressing excitement about the potential of OpenMANET to revolutionize connectivity without the need for additional adapter boards or M.2 cards.

Applications and Features

The primary applications of OpenMANET include search and rescue operations, disaster response, and various off-grid scenarios. It serves as a compelling alternative to LoRa-based solutions like Meshtastic and Meshcore, offering higher bandwidth albeit at the expense of more costly hardware and increased power consumption. OpenMANET facilitates essential field communications, enabling functionalities such as push-to-talk, GPS sharing, and video streaming, alongside integration with the Android Team Awareness Kit (ATAK).

Connectivity Options

One of the standout features of OpenMANET is its ability to connect to the Internet via a single "mesh gate" using Starlink or cellular networks. This capability enhances the operational flexibility of the mesh network, making it a valuable tool for various users in need of reliable communication in challenging environments.
