Optical fiber carries information as light confined in a core by total internal reflection, while real links must account for attenuation, dispersion, connectors, and splices.
Light source and fiber type
Systems may use lasers or LEDs depending on fiber, distance, and data rate. Single-mode fiber serves long-reach and high-rate links; multimode is common for shorter building and data-center runs.
Loss and optical budget
Values such as 0.2 dB/km apply to specific single-mode windows and products, not every fiber. Add transmitter power, receiver sensitivity, connector and splice loss, and aging margin in the link budget.
Selection and installation
Match fiber, connector, and wavelength to the transceivers, respect bend radius, and keep end faces clean. Resistance to tapping is useful but does not replace encryption and access control.
