The DS3231 is a real-time clock for projects that must retain accurate date and time after main power is removed. It communicates over I²C and integrates a temperature-compensated crystal oscillator.
Why it is more accurate
The Analog Devices data sheet specifies ±2 ppm from 0 to 40°C and ±3.5 ppm from -40 to 85°C. Temperature compensation reduces the drift associated with an uncompensated external crystal, although actual system performance still depends on the module and operating conditions.
What the IC contains
The DS3231 tracks calendar time, handles leap years, and provides two alarms, a square-wave output, and an internal temperature sensor. The IC itself does not include EEPROM; some breakout boards add a separate AT24C32 device, so check the board schematic.
Battery backup
VBAT keeps time when VCC is absent. Service life depends on battery capacity, temperature, board leakage, and storage conditions, so a fixed multi-year claim is misleading. A CR2032 is a primary, non-rechargeable cell. Inspect the module because some boards include a charge path intended for an LIR2032 and should not charge a CR2032.
