The BMP180 is an integrated sensor that measures both atmospheric pressure and temperature at once, allowing an approximate altitude calculation based on the pressure reading — a use case that goes beyond simple temperature sensors like the LM35.
Components needed
An Arduino board, a BMP180 sensor module, and connecting wires.
Wiring it up
The module connects via the I2C protocol using just two wires: SDA for data and SCL for clock, with the pin numbers varying by Arduino board (A4 and A5 on the Uno, pins 20 and 21 on the Mega), at a fixed I2C address of 0x77. The module includes an onboard 3.3V regulator that lets it connect directly to a 5V Arduino board with no extra level-shifting circuit needed.
How it works
The module measures atmospheric pressure across a 300 to 1100 hPa range (roughly equivalent to altitudes from -500 to +9000 meters above sea level), and temperature across a -40°C to +85°C range with roughly ±1°C accuracy. The sensor draws under 1mA during measurement and drops to about 5µA in idle mode, making it power-efficient for battery-powered projects. The code typically displays temperature, pressure, and calculated altitude readings, along with the option to correct pressure for sea level, over the serial monitor.
