Wiring a WS2812B LED Strip to Arduino and Controlling It

Engineering illustration: Wiring a WS2812B LED Strip to Arduino and Controlling It

The WS2812B LED strip differs from ordinary LEDs in one key way: every LED on the strip has its own built-in control chip, allowing you to control each LED's color and brightness individually through just a single data wire.

Components needed

An Arduino board, a WS2812B strip, a 220-470 ohm resistor, and a suitable capacitor for the power line.

Wiring it up

The strip needs just three connections: a data line connected to a digital pin (pin 5 in common examples), a 5V power line, and a ground line shared between the Arduino and the power source. For short strips (under 30 LEDs), the Arduino's own 5V pin can supply power. It's recommended to place a 220 or 470 ohm resistor between the digital output pin and the strip's data pin to reduce electrical noise, plus a capacitor on the power lines to improve voltage stability.

How it works

Control relies on the FastLED library, which provides ready-made color palettes and pre-built animation functions, and the library handles the timing-critical protocol these addressable LEDs require, sparing the programmer from dealing with low-level data transmission details, and allowing color and brightness to be set for each LED on the strip simply through ready-made functions.
