When a monitor, keyboard and mouse are available, Raspberry Pi OS provides a straightforward NetworkManager interface for wireless setup. The exact icon appearance can vary with the desktop version and theme, so rely on connection status rather than icon colour.
Confirm that the hardware supports WiFi
Use a Raspberry Pi with built-in wireless connectivity or a supported USB WiFi adapter. If the adapter is not detected, no desktop setting can compensate for a missing driver, inadequate power or unsupported hardware.
Set the WLAN country
Dual-band wireless is disabled until a WLAN country is selected on relevant Raspberry Pi models. Open the localisation settings in Control Centre, choose the correct country and apply the change. This determines the legal channels and transmit settings available to the radio.
Join a network
Select the network icon in the system tray, wait for scanning to finish, choose the SSID and enter the password. For a hidden SSID, use the advanced option to connect to a hidden wireless network and select the correct security type.
Verify and troubleshoot
Open NetworkManager again to confirm the active network, then test access to the router and internet separately. If the SSID does not appear, confirm the WLAN country, signal strength and frequency compatibility. Some boards or USB adapters support only 2.4GHz. Avoid repeatedly changing configuration files when the desktop and NetworkManager already own the connection profile.
