Introducing Opener: An Open-Source Implementation of the DECT NR+ Standard for Massive IoT

Opener: A Revolutionary Step in IoT Communication

Opener has emerged as a significant open-source reference implementation of the DECT NR+ protocol stack, also referred to as DECT-2020 NR. This innovative development is tailored for massive Internet of Things (IoT) applications and low-latency machine-to-machine communications. The initiative is backed by the Opener Initiative and the OpenDECT-X project, with funding from the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR).

The DECT NR+ standard boasts impressive capabilities, supporting up to one million devices per square kilometer and offering years of battery life for low-power sensors. It facilitates both non-IP and IPv6 traffic, mesh networking, and random-access operation. Additionally, it is designed for ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC), achieving sub-millisecond air-interface latency and a reliability target of 99.999%.

Unlike traditional 3GPP cellular networks, DECT NR+ operates without a centralized infrastructure, utilizing context-based device roles. It functions within the license-exempt spectrum of 1880–1930 MHz (1.9 GHz) and plans to extend its reach to the 3.8–4.2 GHz band in the future.
