A Hall-effect sensor responds to magnetic field, but its output may be a digital switch, a latch, or a linear analog signal. Not every module provides both forms.
Digital switch
The output changes at a defined field and polarity and releases at another threshold because of hysteresis. Some modules are active-low and some outputs require a pull-up.
Linear sensor
Voltage shifts around a reference with field within the specified range. Calibrate offset, sensitivity, and polarity and respect the logic supply limits.
Applications
For wheel speed, count digital-switch pulses over time and account for the number of magnets. Do not read a digital switch with analogRead as though it were a linear field sensor.
Engineering review: verify the library version, module operating voltage, and the actual board pinout before wiring; visually similar breakout boards can differ.
