Flame Sensor: Building an Educational Fire Alarm with Arduino

Engineering illustration: Flame Sensor: Building an Educational Fire Alarm with Arduino

A flame sensor works by detecting the infrared radiation emitted by fire, which makes it suitable for building simple educational fire-detection systems that alert when a nearby flame source is sensed.

Components needed

An Arduino Uno board, a flame sensor module, an LED for alerting, and connecting wires.

Wiring it up

The sensor's analog output connects to pin A0, and the indicator LED connects to digital pin 13.

How it works

The code reads the analog value from the sensor every 500 milliseconds, and classifies the danger level using three thresholds: readings above 800 mean a flame source is very close, triggering rapid blinking as an urgent alarm; readings between 500 and 800 mean moderate detection, keeping the LED steadily lit; while readings below 500 mean no danger, turning the LED off entirely.

Safety note: This project is purely educational and is in no way a substitute for officially certified fire detectors. Do not rely on it for actual protection of property or life, and always use certified fire alarm equipment anywhere real safety is required.
