Connecting a Piezoelectric Sensor to Arduino with Input Protection

Connecting a Piezoelectric Sensor to Arduino with Input Protection

A piezoelectric disc generates voltage when bent or struck and can act as an actuator when driven by an alternating voltage. Its pulse may reach a high voltage even though available energy is small.

Input protection

Do not connect an uncontrolled piezo directly to an ADC input. Use a series resistor, discharge resistor, and clamp diodes or another protection network so the pin remains inside the controller limits.

Reading

Sample fast enough to capture the pulse, record a peak or windowed energy value, and apply a threshold calibrated for the mechanical mounting.

Use

It suits knock, vibration, and impact detection. Quantitative measurements need controlled mounting, calibration, and often a charge amplifier.

Engineering review: verify the library version, module operating voltage, and the actual board pinout before wiring; visually similar breakout boards can differ.
