Building a 20 kg Scale with HX711 and a Load Cell

A load cell combines strain gauges in a bridge, and the HX711 amplifies the tiny differential bridge voltage and converts it digitally. It does not measure “resistance directly,” and accurate weight requires proper mechanics and calibration.

Wiring

E+ and E- excite the bridge and A+ and A- carry its signal, but load-cell wire colors are not universal. Follow the cell datasheet or identify excitation and signal pairs by measurement. Connect DT and SCK to suitable digital pins.

Mechanical mounting

Mount the fixed and live ends as specified, apply load along the intended axis, and avoid twist, side load, and overload. Platform and fixture quality are part of scale accuracy.

Calibration

Tare with no load, then use a known mass within the operating range to calculate the factor. Recalibrate after changing the mounting, temperature environment, or load cell, and monitor drift and noise.

Engineering review: verify the library version, module operating voltage, and the actual board pinout before wiring; visually similar breakout boards can differ.
