A Practical Introduction to 3D Printing: From Model to Part

A 3D printer builds a physical object the same way it appears on screen, one thin horizontal layer at a time, until a three-dimensional shape emerges from what started as a flat digital file.

Where the design comes from

The workflow starts from a three-dimensional CAD model or 3D scan. STL stores only surface triangles and handles units and metadata poorly; 3MF is often preferable where the toolchain supports it.

From model to layers

A slicer converts the model into layers, paths, and machine moves, commonly as G-code. Orientation, supports, layer height, temperature, and speed affect print quality, while material, tolerances, and wall design determine functional suitability.

Different technologies, same basic idea

Not every 3D printer builds layers the same way. Fused deposition modeling (FDM) melts and extrudes plastic filament through a nozzle, while stereolithography (SLA) cures liquid resin with targeted light, layer by layer — different mechanisms aimed at the same end result.

What it's good at

The technology can produce nearly any geometric shape without the tooling a traditional manufacturing process would need, though print time varies considerably — from a few hours to several days — depending on the object's size and complexity and the specific printing technology used.

Where it's used

3D printing has found real footing across automotive, aerospace, healthcare, and consumer product design, valuable both for full-scale manufacturing and for hobbyist and prototyping work. Because a capable printer still represents a real investment, many businesses instead offer print-on-demand services, letting anyone submit a digital design and have it produced professionally without owning the equipment.

Engineering review: verify the library version, module operating voltage, and the actual board pinout before wiring; visually similar breakout boards can differ.
